Energy Management: Solutions for Energy Efficiency

The European Directive 2023/1791 on energy efficiency introduces new obligations and opportunities for companies in the coming years. More businesses, including SMEs, will have to perform energy audits or implement an Energy Management System compliant with the ISO 50001 standard. SMEs not subject to mandatory audit requirements will also be encouraged to conduct voluntary energy audits, with potential benefits in terms of reduced consumption, costs, and environmental impact.

The new obligations, effective from the entry into force of the Directive, by October 2025, include:

• companies with annual consumption greater than 10 TJ that do not implement an energy management system, must carry out an energy audit within one year of the Directive’s entry into force . The audit’s recommendations  must lead to an action plan to be published in the company’s annual report
• companies with annual consumption greater than 85 TJ must adopt an Energy Management System compliant with ISO50001 within two years of the Directive’s entry into force
